”The sun is setting into evening. Holding hands, let’s walk home with the crows” Emerges from memories—the memories inside the walls of Nokogirini from when it was a textile factory, as well as memories from Cogswell’s childhood growing up in Japan. Respecting the site’s history, this mixed-media installation is created primarily with textiles.
“….let’s walk home with the crows” is particularly meaningful to Cogswell because Japan is her first country of memory. She sang this song as a child in kindergarten and danced at the Obon Matsuri wearing her yukata. The different places she lived in Japan include Nagoya, as well as Toyohashi, Kobe, Marugame and Kanazawa.
“Karasu to Isshoni Kaerimasyo” explores memories through cultural references to home and rivers. Following the crows at sunset along a river created with fishing nets and guided by candlelight on origami boats, Cogswell hopes to invite visitors to re-visit their memories as well.
Bio
Margaret Cogswell is a mixed-media installation artist residing in West Shokan, New York. Awards include fellowships from The Tree of Life Foundation (2024), John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship (2009); Pollock-Krasner Foundation (2017, 1987, 1991) and New York Foundation for the Arts (2007,1993).
Since 2003, Cogswell's work has focused on an ongoing series of RIVER FUGUES projects exploring the interdependency of people, industry and rivers. These projects, along with works on paper, have been commissioned and exhibited in museums and art centers nationally and internationally including the Zendai Zhujiajiao Art Museum, China (solo 2014); CUE Art Foundation, NYC (solo 2014); Art Museum, University of Wyoming, Laramie (solo 2012); Art Museum, University of Memphis, Tennessee (solo 2008); Tang Museum, Saratoga Springs, NY (group 2009-2010); the BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels, Monaco Ministry of Culture, and Field Museum in Chicago (traveling group exhibition, 2007-09).
In 2024, selected works on paper are included in the exhibition “Women of Spirit” at Zurcher Gallery, NYC and Tidal Shift at the University of New England Art Gallery in Biddeford, Maine. In August 2024, a new site-specific installation, “Karasu to Issyoni Kaerimasyo”, will be exhibited at Nokogiri II in Ichinomiya, Japan.

「からすといっしょにかえ りましょう」は、幼少時代を名古屋、豊橋、丸⻲そして⾦沢で過ごしたマーガレット‧コグスウ ェルによって創り出される、遠い記憶を呼び覚ますサイトスペシフィック‧インスタレーション です。
作品の重要なコンセプトであり、展覧会タイトル「からすといっしょにかえりましょう」は、童 謡「⼣焼け⼩焼け」の⼀節です。コグスウェルは幼稚園で習い歌ったこと、お盆の頃の夏祭りで 浴⾐を着て踊ったことを⼤切に憶えています。
mh PROJECTのスペースは元織物⼯場内にあります。コグスウエルは歴史を経た建物や空間に遺 された記憶、そして⾃⾝の初期の記憶を織り成すミクストメディア作品として、マテリアルには 布地を多く使⽤しています。
「からすといっしょにかえりましょう」は、鑑賞者が⿂網で作られた川に沿って、⼣暮れ空のカ ラスを追いかけ、折り紙の⾈の光に導かれながら、それぞれの裡にある懐かしい記憶を再訪する 「場」となることをコグスウェルは願っています。
