Could light become sound?
In 2026, mhPROJECT’s autumn program presents Where Light Resounds, an exhibition by contemporary artist Kazue Taguchi, who has continued to create works inspired by her fascination with light.
“Light” is not limited to the light that appears before our eyes. It is “light” as a single sensory experience, encompassing the light that remains as a memory, the presence of life, the lingering resonance of prayer, and even things that cannot be seen.
Touch, move, and listen to light and sound. In response to each of these individual actions, light and sound waver and resonate, giving rise to new phenomena within the space. What emerges is not a single work predetermined in advance, but “the sound of light,” born anew each time through an encounter with the viewer.
Taguchi describes her thoughts behind the project as follows “Once carrying the memories of the wool textile industry, Nokogiri Ni has received and held soft light. Within this richly layered space, Where Light Resounds is an interactive installation completed through the hands of its viewers.
Intricately cut mirrors, films that cause light to waver, and sculptural works resembling bells stand quietly within the space. When viewers touch and move them, they begin to produce various sounds. As the resonance of the bells overlaps with the faint sounds of materials rubbing against one another, the reflections of light spreading through the space also change their appearance, like living beings.
Touch the work, freely let the sounds resonate, and spend a moment in resonance with the light. Light becomes sound, and sound takes on light as it fills the space. Within that resonance, quietly listen for the “sound of light” that rises within you.”
KAZUE TAGUCHI
Taguchi creates installations using light as her primary medium. Inspired by the stained glass of European churches, she uses glass, mirrors, reflective plastics, and plastic film to create immersive spaces that are solemn yet relaxing.
After studying stained-glass techniques in Barcelona, Taguchi was selected in 2005 for the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs’ Program of Overseas Study for Emerging Artists and moved to Richmond, Virginia, where she earned an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts. She subsequently moved to New York with support from the Pola Art Foundation and spent many years developing her artistic practice in both Europe and the United States.
Her work now spans a wide range of fields and crosses international borders, including solo and group exhibitions, scenography for museums of modern art in Peru, and workshops at a design museum in New York.
